Message from the
Executive Chairman
The Demise of America’s Onetime Capital of Black Wealth
View Politico Article
Chicago was once known for its power marriage of Black business and politics. Today, many Black-owned companies have shuttered, dramatically changing the city's landscape.
According to the December 7, 2021 article referenced above, Chicago's Black business community has permanently changed. As Executive Chairman, what is says to me is that the BLC's work is more important now than ever.
If not us, then who? If not now, then when?
We are the Business Leadership Council. It is our job and responsibility to help return to Chicago to its aforementioned place as the black business capital of the world.
Although Chicago's Black business community has struggled, collectively as an organization, we are stronger than ever... but that is not enough.
In 2022, we look to expand programming and be more inclusive of community-based business that are directly providing services to our people.
We are starting a Business Leadership Academy to help to train new and emerging businesses.
We are as motivated and determined as ever and together, we can accomplish our stated goal: building generation wealth in the black community.
Charles Smith
Executive Chairman
Ready, Willing and Able
If we learned anything from 2021, it was that we, as a community of Black business leaders can move our businesses to the next level despite the challenges. Many of our businesses did more than just merely survive in 2021—we thrived and grew because we took advantage of new opportunities and doors that opened as never before.
While we continue to face challenges in an ever-evolving workplace, we are more resourceful than before and looking forward to 2022. We have proven to ourselves and the world, that we are ready, willing and able to compete and destined for even greater success in the years to come.
Avis LaVelle
Executive Director
Persevering to New Heights
The last two years of the pandemic have forced us all to reassess and re-evaluate our approach to life, business, social interactions, and everything in between. But through it all, we have persevered and we are still finding ways to shatter that glass ceiling.
As we quickly approach this next year at BLC, we have many exciting new initiatives that we are launching. We are kicking off a training series and workshops designed to help take your business to the next level. We're also launching our first podcast spotlighting the wealth of talent that exists within our ranks and beyond. It has never been more exciting to be a member of this organization. I look forward to our continued partnership as we to elevate BLC to new heights.
Cory Thames
Chief Engagement Officer
Civic and business leaders come
to the BLC, seeking support for positions and projects that impact the broader African American community. We carefully consider each proposal before deciding to add our voices and take a position.
BLC Forges a Federal Infrastructure Funding Coalition. BLC invited the Chicago Urban League, Black Contractors United, and Chambers of Commerce from Chatham, Southeast Chicago, Quad Cities Development and West Side Rise to meet regularly to help identify the highest priority targets at the community level for federal infrastructure funding.
BLC joins forces with grassroots trades movement seeking equity in Chicago’s Project Labor Agreement (PLA). The City of Chicago officials and organized labor unions are renegotiating terms for an extension of the PLA that governs much of the work extended by government contracts. The current PLA expires at the end of the year. BLC has urged Mayor Lightfoot to ensure that the next PLA promotes more skilled training and work opportunities for minorities in skilled trades while not penalizing smaller construction firms by limiting their ability to hire non-union workers.
BLC Joins Amicus Brief for Obama Presidential Center. BLC is one of 59 community organizations that appealed to the Federal Courts to dismiss all remaining legal actions that are impediments to work continuing on the project that will bring thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in redevelopment to Chicago’s South Side.
The Business Leadership Council is welcoming new members whose professional
skills, talents and business capabilities make us a more powerful voice for the
African American business community.

Brook Architecture
RaMona Westbrook, founder and president of Brook Architecture, is a native Chicagoan. She was introduced to architecture in high school drafting classes. “I enjoyed drafting and knew that this was something I could do for the rest of my life.”
From her start as a solo practictioner in 1995, she now employs seven design professionals and has designed and managed projects for the Chicago Housing Authority, the Public Building Commission of Chicago, the Chicago Transit Authority, the University of Illinois, and the City Colleges of Chicago.
One of Brook’s largest projects was the relocation of the Chicago Public School headquarters from 125 S. Clark Street to four floors at 1 N. Dearborn, the former site of Sears' flagship store. RaMona says. “We completed the renovation and design of over 180,000 square feet in eleven months =- something that typically takes three years. But what is most important to me, is that the CPS employees have been able to be more effective in their extremely important jobs, which has a profound impact on the lives of our city’s youth.”
Brook is a community-focused company, and its portfolio illustrates the firm’s core values: Architecture should improve the quality of the places where people live, learn, work and play. She is part of the planning team for Landmark Development’s One Central – a transit-oriented project for Chicago’s south-side.
A recognized expert in affordable housing, Brook is designing two buildings for Bronzeville’s Oakwood Shores, a 21-unit and 30-unit apartment buildings, and is part of the team for Park Station in Woodlawn. Woodlawn will also be the location of Brook’s most recent project award, Woodlawn Crossing, a transit-oriented development that will include a CTA transit station, a Chicago Public Library and commercial office space.
With her Master of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois, Westbrook began her career on the East Coast as an intern architect for a large interior architecture firm but later returned to Chicago. In 1992, Westbrook became one of the first African American women to be licensed as an Architect in the State of Illinois.
